Perch on the building of a public ferry terminal in Gdynia

On Tuesday, 9 June, a perch on the building of a public ferry terminal in the Port of Gdynia was hung, built by DORACO. It will be one of the most modern ferry terminals in the Baltic Sea basin. The investment is co-financed from the EU Cohesion Fund. Value of the investment comes to more than PLN 200 million.

The Seaport in Gdynia implements one of the biggest infrastructural investments in its history. The new terminal will be linked with the international transport system via A1 motorway.

– This investment is mainly a response to the market needs arising from constantly growing passenger traffic and trade exchange with Scandinavia. The new facility, along with accompanying infrastructure on the one hand will make it possible to handle large ferries – up to 240 metres, on the other hand – will contribute to increased frequency of their calling at Gdynia – said Adam Meller, President of the Management Board of Seaport in Gdynia S.A.

Handling of transport in a two-level system

Spatial solutions and equipment of the ferry terminal will make it possible to handle ferry transport in a two-level system at one ferry station and to handle passenger traffic. The passenger traffic will be handled from the passenger gallery linking the building of the terminal with the ferry station.

– It is one of the flagship hydrotechnical projects which DORACO has the pleasure to perform as the general contractor. The investment will contribute to improvement of quality of passenger service. Our partners manufacture, upon a special order, ramps which link a ferry with a ro-ro platform and a mobile connector along which passengers will enter a ferry – informed Karol Zduńczyk, President of the Management Board of the DORACO Construction Corporation.

Intensive implementation phase of project

Construction of a public ferry terminal has come into an intensive implementation stage. It means that after conducting the majority of demolitions, earthworks and network works there was a culmination of reinforced concrete works, road works as well as finishing works were commenced. – A considerable part of works includes making large-surface manoeuvring yards and in this respect we have already constructed more than 2.3 ha of yards of paving stone, we have made more than 5 km of sanitary networks, we have made 550 m of trackage and nearly 400 RM of fencing. Moreover, we have mounted a part of lighting posts – said Karol Zduńczyk. It is assumed that at this stage of implementation of the project, almost a half of the investment area achieved the target appearance.

Hydrotechnical works are performed in parallel. Within this scope, whole 450-metre pile wall of the new wharf was made and on it nearly 180 RM of reinforced concrete cap. There are pending works dedicated to ro-ro platform i.e. an artificial island which serve as a place for transfer of stream of cars between a ferry and the wharf.

Works in buildings

Facade, roof works and internal installations are pending in buildings. Wall and ceiling works are performed. So far, nearly 280 t of reinforced steel, 350 t of steel structure and 3 thousand m3 of concrete have been built in these facilities.

Access viaduct

The access viaduct consumed more than 600 m3 of concrete and 120 t of reinforced steel. Within its construction, all foundation footings were made. At present, supports are finalized for the viaduct’s load-bearing structure.

– built in 12.5 t of ribbed steel,

– completed prefabricated reinforced concrete ceiling of filigran type with area of approx. 150 m2,

– insulated more than 1,000 m2 of area,

– mounted 60 prefabricated retaining walls on the driveway ramp,

– built approx. 300 m2 of bearing walls.


– liquidated existing networks (crane power supply, site joints, lighting posts),

– completed 80 reinforced concrete wells for electric wells and approx. 700 RM of cable ducting between them,

– mounted 7 complete lighting masts along with floodlights.


– mounted 32 telecommunication wells and approximately 90% of cable ducting.

Foundation stone embedded at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport!

On Friday, 5 June, the ceremonial signing was held of the foundation act and laying the foundation stone for the extension of Passenger Terminal T2 at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport by adding a western wing.

– Recent months required the introduction of new principles related to the work of our team in view of the present situation. However, this did not influence the schedule of activities. – states Karol Zduńczyk, President of DORACO Management Board. – The foundation stone, being a symbol of a building’s stability, has taken on additional importance at present – stability is something that we miss, no matter in which part of the globe we are.

The new, additional area of 16 thousand m2 will increase safety and the quality of service for passengers of the Airport in Gdańsk. The investment will have a significant influence on the region’s development.

– We are laying the foundation stone under the third stage of the terminal’s extension. We shall not stop and we have even greater determination to develop. In spite of epidemics and crises, we boldly extend the infrastructure, believing that it will serve our passengers well and help them to travel comfortably and safely. – said Tomasz Kloskowski, President of Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport.

Nearly 100 people are working on the current stage of the investment, whereas at its peak, the number of staff members will increase to approximately five hundred.


The agreement for extension of the terminal was signed by the Gdańsk Airport with the DORACO Construction Corporation on 15 October 2019.

Work conducted so far:

– building the reinforced-concrete underground part of the building and underground reinforced-concrete installation channel,

– 70% of construction elements: walls and posts at zero level,

– 95% of earthworks.

In progress:

– making reinforced concrete posts at 0 level made of architectural concrete,

– building a ceiling at 0.5 level (mezzanine) in the southern part of the building,

– building a ceiling at 1.0 level in the northern part of the building,

– building walls and posts at 0.5 storey (mezzanine) in the southern part of the building,

– underground installations around the terminal building.

Planned works:

– in late June / early July – commencing assembly of the steel structure of the building wing,

– in July and August – beginning building external staircases on the airport apron,

– in late August / early September – beginning assembly of aluminium and glass facade.

662 tons of reinforced steel have been used for work conducted so far;

Approx. 34,500 cubic metres of earth have been dug, as approximately 1900 truckloads of spoil were carried away;

Approx. 12,300 cubic metres of foundation backfills have been made;

4,820 cubic metres of concrete have been poured, an amount corresponding to 535 concrete mixers.

Children’s day at DORACO – with HEVELIANUM online

On Saturday, 30 May, the homes of DORACO staff members took on a creative atmosphere – children took part in an online meeting with scientists from the Gdańsk Hevelianum Centre, who specially for us carried out educational demonstrations with subject matter referring to house construction. The demonstrations were divided into issues related to: durability, fire, water, air, colours and light. During them, participants could ask questions to operators in a chat session. The interesting meeting stirred even more enthusiasm when our participants began co-participating in experiments which often had a surprising ending 🙂

We are glad of the fact that in the current, exceptional situation, we managed to bring some joy to our dear little ones and we send our best wishes to children on their special day!

DORACO with a new contract in the Port of Gdynia!

We are pleased to inform that yesterday in the Port of Gdynia, the DORACO Management Board signed an agreement for implementation of a subsequent investment for this Investor, entitled “Reconstruction of the Northern Pilot Groyne (Ostroga Pilotowa) in the Port of Gdynia”.

Reconstruction of the Northern Groyne aims at making it possible for large container vessels with length of up to 400 m to enter the Port of Gdynia. The work will consist in widening the entry between the existing groynes to 140 m (the current width comes to 100 m), by demolishing approx. 43 RM of the Northern Groyne and general reconstruction of the remaining section to enable performance of dredging works in the next stage to a depth of -16.0 m.

The scope of DORACO’s work, planned for 46 weeks, includes:

  • demolition of the construction part of the Northern Groyne along the length of 42.7 m (approx. 600 m2) from the side of the Pilot Entry, its shortening to a length of approx. 57.1 m;
  • reconstruction of the remaining part of the Northern Groyne along the length of 57.1 m to adapt the structure to a technical depth of -16.0 m from the side of the Pilot Entry;
  • building a waving arrester on the eastern side of the Northern Groyne;
  • building a shore housing 25 m long at the bottom of the Northern Groyne from the side of the Outer Port;
  • electrical and sanitary work.

President of DORACO as a participant of the debate on economic risks in 2020

on economic risks in 2020. The President of DORACO Karol Zduńczyk spoke of hazards and challenges from the perspective of a general contractor.

The president mentioned, inter alia, the problem of a shortage of staff and increasing labour costs. He indicated the constant growth in the number of performed investments, leading to large demand for building materials, which has a periodic influence on their unavailability and increased prices. He paid attention to the reduction of new guarantee limits, which is reflected in low profitability of implemented contracts. Therefore, general contractors are reducing innovative activities, e.g. use of modern technologies or materials. The concern related to the coronavirus epidemic in China was added to the already existing hazards. It may impinge on a decline of production and in consequence on an increase in prices, e.g. for stainless steel or black sheet metal.
