Students of Marine and Coastal Engineering of Gdansk University of Technology visited DORACO

Practical classes are the most effective form of learning. DORACO Construction Corporation, the patron of the Interdepartmental Faculty of Marine and Coastal Engineering at the Gdansk University of Technology, invited students to participate in selected hydrotechnical investment projects currently being carried out by the company.
Training visits of students of Marine and Coastal Engineering at hydrotechnical construction sites are an important element of cooperation between DORACO and the Gdansk University of Technology in this field – says Piotr Siemaszko, Director of the Hydrotechnical Department in DORACO. – DORACO engineers, experts in the field of hydrotechnics, willingly share their practical knowledge related to the executed contracts, while students have the opportunity to learn the specificity of hydrotechnical works, depending on the degree of advancement and size of a given project.

On Friday, 14 June this year, students of Marine and Coastal Engineering visited the Obrońcy Poczty Polskiej and Mewy Quays in the Port of Gdansk, where advanced reinforced concrete works are underway, the surface of the quay is being constructed and the construction of the quay plate is in process in the Mewy section. Next, the group moved to the BON quay, where ramming works have already been completed – the combi-wall buried and CFA piles laid. Wave dampers are currently in construction there, whose purpose will be to dissipate wave energy and eliminate the phenomenon of bumper wave.

Another point in the itinerary was the construction of the passenger terminal in the Port of Gdynia. This is currently the key project of the port; its implementation will enable the reception of ferry vessels of 245 meters in size. The works connected with the execution of piling for the terminal building as well as works preparing for the expansion and modernization of the quay are in progress here.

– The possibility of direct observation of works on hydrotechnical construction sites is a unique opportunity for students of our faculty to confront theoretical knowledge with practice. During such visits, students can see what work on construction sites actually looks like. They can also discuss their doubts on an ongoing basis with experienced employees – said Jacek Frost from the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Shipbuilding of the Gdansk University of Technology, supervisor of the group, at the end of the meeting.
